4 King Royale

Art Direction, User Flow Analysis, Visual Design, and Visual Assets Generation.

About the project

World Village Games is a young company dedicated to the creation of party games. 4 King Royale® is the adaptation of one of their games to the mobile device market.

They approached me a few times to design, in some cases develop and art direct some of their endeavors. This time I worked on competitive analysis, user flows, wire frames, prototypes, branding, game flow and pace, usability and UI design.

As with all of their projects it was quite a bit of fun, specially because the WVG team is deeply involved with the process. At the time of this writing, the game continues under development and it is expected to be lunched Q2 2018.

The Challenge

4KR, had already been developed and was already being sold at the app stores, originally the design for the UI and brand had been done in house following the standard look and feel of more traditional solitaire mobile games.

What WVG was looking for was to reach out to a younger demographic, after the completive analysis, and user research, decided to update the UI and identify red routes, we wanted to bring up it's appeal to younger audience, that has already developed an expectation about the style of a high quality game.

The Emblem

After creating a persona for the target audience and comparing the style of games used by that group, we settled in a clean, simple and minimalist style.

We worked on the emblem for the app, that would eventually become it's app icon.

As most everything I do, I started with hand sketches of the symbol, moving to cleaner vector versions, color selection to finally settle on a minimalistic faux 3 dimensional design

The UI

The UI, was built from the ground up, starting with wire frames, the card symbols and the icons all the way to the HUD, using the emblem as our guide.
